Sparrow numbers 'plummet by 68%'  

 

The house sparrow feeds on insects like aphids during the summer months 

The population of house sparrows in Britain has fallen by 68% in the past three decades, according to the RSPB. 



A report by the charity said the paving over of front gardens and removal of trees had caused a big decline in insects that the birds eat.

			<description>I just found this story and that I should share it as it doesn shed some lite on the issue.  It is true, our Eastern Gray squirrel was introduced to England, and now it's destroying England's Red squirrel populations.  Well at least they can hunt and eat the gray squirrels, what are we supposed to do with the sparrows?

House sparrows and hedgehogs have been identified as in need of greater protection to ensure their survival.



The creatures join a list of over 1,100 UK species which will be given priority conservation help under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.

			<description>I'll let you check this one out on their site.  It's nothing new to us, just more proof that poisoning is nonsense.  Aside from killing non-target species, dead birds scattered throughout the neighborhood and in people's yards is an obvious problem.



If they had controlled the populations of the problem birds to begin with they wouldn't need to take such drastic measures.  Good thing we have the Sparrow Squad around!
