Welcome to the Sparrow Squad's bird management website and forum!

Any bird lover worth their salt knows that the English Sparrow is a destructive force in the world of songbird management. Often times the Purple Martin lovers get most of the attention in this area but let's be honest, the English Sparrow decimates populations of many types of songbirds and they must be controlled.

Aside from the songbird management aspect of controlling this problem species, there is the sanitary side of the house. These birds gather in such a way that they will make a mess out of whatever they decide to perch on and their nesting sites are absolutely disgusting, as well as a health hazard.

Please take the time to register on our forum and join the fight against this horrible problem. On the forum you have the chance to keep record of your bird populations and share what you have found to be effective as well as learn what others are doing. In addition, birds of a feather flock together! It's only fitting that you join our community and be part of a movement that is sweeping across the nation!

Sparrow Operation Guidelines
_______________________________

The goal of the Sparrow Squad is to control the English Sparrow population in order to promote a healthy native songbird population.  This can be achieved on a local level by trapping and managing the populations at your home or on your block, or by creating a community awareness program in your town.

We all must follow these steps to be successful:

1. Evaluate

Before you can begin an effective management program you have to understand the current populations.  This means you must observe the behaviors and numbers of the different species in your area and be prepared to manage this situation according to your desired species.

2. Gain Control

Once you have evaluated the current situation and have devised a management gameplan it is time to start taking control of your situation.  This can be done in several ways, all depending on the environmental factors you are dealing with and the types/behaviors of the birds in your area.  Most of the time, however, this means effective trapping and alot of it.  You must diminish the sparrow population if you are to be successful.  Deterring the birds is an ineffective means of accomplishing your goal, and you are simply pushing the birds into someone else's area.  You wouldn't throw your garbage bags into your neighbor's yard for them to throw away would you?

3. Maintain Control/Promote Songbird Recovery

Now that you have gained control of the sparrow population, you must maintain control of that population. This usually means trapping any new populations or stragglers that may pop up.  Many times this is impossible if your neighbors don't mind the invasion, but you have to try your best.  This is also the time to begin promoting your songbird populations.  Depending on your desired species, this is when you would want to put up bird houses, feeders, and baths to create a safe haven for the songbirds.  Songbird management is discussed on the forum.

This is a rough explaination of the process of taking control.  Many people use many different way of accomplishing the goal, but the goal is always the same and we can always learn from eachother.  This problem certainly will not be solved by any one person as it effects entire communities across the nation.

Stand and fight for our songbirds!
